Chapter Five

After I’d shifted back, I struggled through the agonizing pain in my arm and shoulder to get my gym pants on, but it was after succeeding in pulling on my sports bra that I thought I might pass out. I saw stars as I wailed in unexplainable pain that radiated from my arm, through my shoulder, neck, and down my spine.

I almost barfed, but I focused on not blacking out after collapsing onto my side on the ground. I had felt pain before, but my natural healing ability quickly turned that into the tingling sensation as my broken bones or torn ligaments began healing themselves in a timely, shifter fashion. It wasn’t happening this time, though, and this pain was more than I could bear.

“Jen?” Dom’s voice rattled around like an echo in my head.

Don’t pass out, I had to tell myself.

I felt his warm palm on my forehead, then his fingers gently grazed over my injured arm.

“I’m fine,” I managed, not wanting to open my eyes, knowing the room was spinning while my body was trying to tame my pain receptors.

“You’re not fine. You’re busted up bad. Why aren’t you healing?” His voice was set with concern, a tone I swear I’d never in my life heard come from Dominic Rossi.

My wolf lent me her strength—about time—and on top of being able to use my one arm to pull myself to a sitting position, she also lent me more than that. I felt her open us both up to this guy who suddenly gave me a warm feeling of comfort and completion. Things wolf mates picked up on.

For the first time, I locked eyes with Dom’s dark irises, lined by silver—his wolf was giving him his eyes. Our wolves met, and it was like I was flooded with emotions I never knew I had. Dom’s wolf? Oh my God, I could read his freaking wolf right now!

The wolf was my—yes, my—protector…the other half of my wolf. It was more than that. His wolf didn’t instinctively go into alpha mode on us and dominate my wounded and vulnerable shifter position. His wolf put mine above all and was loyal to its core to me and my wolf. Our little den was silent as both of us seemed to be flooded by this emotional overload. Our wolves were connecting so fast, and I knew by looking into his large eyes that he was having the same difficulty as me, trying to keep up with this supernatural phenomenon.

I inhaled, listening to my heartbeat falling in and out of rhythm and pounding in my head. Dom’s wolf fed me energy that shut that down, and I began to feel stronger and more in control of everything that was hitting me all at once and way too hard.

I licked my parched lips, studying this man through different eyes. Beyond his perfect, god-like appearance was a brave man with an old soul. An unyielding and honorable man who was loyal, and he and his wolf would do anything for me that went beyond explanation.
